For this project we were given the option of doing either nature turns mechanical or the map project. I originally wanted to do the map project, but I couldn't find a map that inspired me to make anything. I decided to brain storm ideas for both projects. I am not the biggest nature person, so I ask Tess to send me pictures of butterflies she had since she has ten million photos of bugs. I actually hate bugs, but butterflies are like the one bug that is not repulsive to me. One of the photos Tess sent me was of a wing that was black and orange, so that is how I was inspired to do split the piece.
The hardest part of this piece was getting the outline on the paper because I wan't everything to be symmetrical. I didn't have the picture of the butterfly body, so I had to find another reference photo to make sure that portion was accurate as well. I also had a challenge with the gears inside the butterfly. I wanted lots of small ones, but after a couple of attempts the gears would have more precision if I made just a few big ones. Once the I finished the annoying process of the sketch I really enjoyed the rest. There was a lot of color in this drawing which was really fun to do, and I was still able to keep my love for neutrals in the mechanical side.
Overall, I love the way this piece turned out. I really love the bright blues in the realistic butterfly and how it ties in to the blues added to the mechanical side. This piece to me showed a lot of growth in my prisma drawings. It is crazy to see how the growth changes so quick even between three pieces done in prisma.
